How to Overcome the Imposter Syndrome

From Cassandra Speaks, by Elizabeth Lesser

  1. Realise that you are not alone.

  2. Don’t make assumptions about people in power (as in, they have imposter syndrome too).

  3. Interrupt the imposter’s voice (in yourself and in others. Let’s call each other out, and then mirror mirror what we call out).

  4. Be an “I Don’t Know It All”. You cannot know everything. If someone claims they do, THEY are the imposter. Competence doesn’t mean you need to know everything, to do it all yourself, or to do it all perfectly or effortlessly.

  5. Know the facts (as in, women stand out for competence)

  6. Know your strengths (and validate and hone them)

  7. See yourself accurately (women tend to judge themselves harshly and less favourably than men).
