Quick Click #61: The Petri-Dish

Last week we asked you to have a look at what is truly in your heart, to get a greater understanding of what some of the subconscious programmes you might be running are saying. When we look at the fundamental questions of our own self-worth we can begin to see where we might be holding ourselves back, stifling our true selves or even sabotaging our success. If we are to truly live the lives of our dreams, then at some stage it will be useful to have a look at what lies beneath. 

We think it’s safe to say that so far this year has been a rollercoaster. And no-one has been spared. Some were locked down, and some still are. Some weren’t locked down, and wished they were. Some held space for others and then needed to find that space for themselves. 

So wherever you currently find yourself on the ride, you have some choices. Even if the choice is the freedom that exists in your own mind. Victor Frankl once said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”

We don’t say this to minimise, but to remind. 

June has been all about connection, and for us to truly connect we must first connect with ourselves. Then our family. Then our friends and work colleagues. Then society. Any time we see a breakdown, we can trace it back to something within ourselves that is awry.

So this week we would love you to have a look around at all of your tribe. The people you laugh and play with, the people you love, and perhaps most interestingly: the people you work with. This last group is where you can learn a lot about your inner workings, as the workplace can be like a petri-dish where you can observe yourself as you may not have the same emotional investment (and blind-spots) that exist with family.

Some things to look at might be:

  • Who do you spend your work days with? 

  • What do you like or dislike about your colleagues? 

  • Does anyone trigger you off (and why)? 

  • What does connection look like in the workplace?

  • Also observe yourself: are you connected with your fellow workers and clients, or are you reserved? 

  • Do you play ‘all in’ or are you just waiting to punch that clock and go home?

  • How can I be more connected at work? (And why would I want to?)

One thing we know for sure is that we all spend a fair chunk of our lives in some form of employment (and yes, this includes SAHMs- just you chicks are on call 24 hours) so it will be fun to see what you notice about how you play when you are there.
