So here we are, creeping closer to the day when we tell our kids it’s okay to let a weird chubby stranger into our house, help himself to our food, maybe let his pets defecate on our lino and leave us some gifts in exchange for our complicitness. Sounds a bit weird when you say it like that, and yet both of us love this time of the year, and whether you celebrate it or not, it’s coming up very soon.
We do still have a week or so to go, so we think this week would be a great time to have a look at Christmas and what it means to you. Sometimes we can get so caught up in “how things have always been” that we forget that it is entirely possible to add, or take away from our big red bag of Christmas traditions. If you are finding that some of the things in your Santa sack are too heavy for you, if you’ve outgrown them, or if they simply don’t serve you any more, then this week would be a fabulous time to unload a few.
When you really have a look at Christmas, it can seem a little silly, and yet it can be a time that is chock full of love and laughter. When we realise that ‘things’ and events don’t have any meaning of their own, but just the meaning we bring to them, then we can see that we have an opportunity to make the tinsel and flashing lights have a bit more depth.
This week we would love you to sit for a moment, maybe with a mug of something Christmassy (we’re thinking a cinnamon scented tea, and if you talk to Al it will be in her ridiculously oversized Christmas cup) and dream up some ways to make this holiday season meaningful.
You might even want to start up a new tradition or two of your own, that could become a golden thread that binds the hearts of your family together as you wind through the years together.
