February 2020: MOVIE: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Based on the book: These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach
This was a tricky one to summarise, as we don’t want to give you an IMBD plot summary, but rather a list of things that struck us as important for our theme on “the rules”. So here are a list of quotes and ideas from the movie. Do yourself a favour, pour a nice cuppa and watch it. It’s worth it. Then watch our FB Live on this, as we will go into more of the plot and themes etc.
Evelyn Greenslade: We loved watching her emerge from her husband and then her son’s rules to do what she wanted and get a job.
Mrs’ Donnelly: From casual racism, to being able to see past caste and become the only person who acknowledges the untouchable.
Evelyn and Mrs Donnelly: “Nothing has worked out quite as I expected”.
(Sometimes that’s the juicy stuff isn’t it?)
Evelyn: “The only real failure is the failure to try. And the measure of success is how we cope with disappointments as we always must. We came here and we tried.. too scared of disappointment to try again. We get up in the morning and we do our best. Nothing else matters.”
Evelyn: “The person who risks nothing, has nothing.”
Evelyn: “All that we know about the future is that it will be different.. Perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same. So we must celebrate the changes.”
Graeme and Judy: “Do you think we will be alright?” “No, it will be extraordinary.”
Douglas (to Ainslee): “One wants to trust.”
Douglas (about Jean): “We have to make the best of things.”
Jean: “We both deserve more than we’ve had.'“
Sonny’s Mum: “Your life will be easier. Not easier, smaller.”
Sonny (to Sunana’s brother): “You see things the way they are not the way you wish them to be.”
Sonny (to Sunana): “Only by loving you as you deserve will I become worthy.”
Sonny: “Nothing happens unless first we dream.”
Sonny: “Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, then it’s not the end.”
Sonny: “Resist and you’ll be knocked over. Swim into it and you’ll come out the other side: it’s a new and different world and the challenge is to survive and even to thrive.”
